Prophetic Formation – A Divine and Developmental Approach to Spiritual Formation

By Michael Traylor
We are witnessing a movement of God that can be best described as prophetic formation — a movement defined as an organized and sustained challenge to the status quo, initiated and sustained by God to promote the spiritual formation of individuals and communities that fulfill God’s purposes.
Spiritual formation is a popular phrase used to describe an individual’s spiritual journey and maturity. It is not uncommon to meet someone who identifies as spiritual, but not religious. The spiritual but not religious person is the person who is open to the reality of things in the spiritual realm, but disenchanted with the rules, rituals, and relationships found in organized religion. If you are reading this from the United States, statistically, this represents most of your neighbors and co-workers. For many people, the need for an authentic experience with God has no room for detours of dry rituals and information about God, in contrast to an authentic experience with God. The quest to experience God and the product of such encounters is the essence of spiritual formation.

Mark Adams –
While some fear a trend of “deconstruction” Dr. Traylor places the experience rightly in salvation history as an ongoing and prophetic work of the Holy Spirit, chiseling away at hearts, cultures and even denominations that have lost sight of God’s deepest priorities and reforming from age to age through the community work of the Spirit. This is a great book! It can be read as a sweeping prophetic analysis of how God has and is working. It can also be read as a devotional or group guide for deeper conversation. Every chapter made me think, the whole book is well written, deeply researched and powerful, but chapter 8 contains some of the best prophetic pros I’ve read in quite a season. A must read for every Free Methodist leader, and anyone who wants to embrace alignment with God’s priorities over our cultural norms.
